This song accompanies the ritual of “Maundy” or “Washing of the Feet” on Holy or Great Thursday according to the ancient rite. It is performed as a Florid Chant or Gandz, which is a kind of musical poem that has its roots in the oldest chanting sermons of the Breviary. The works of Grigor Narekatsi (Gregory of Narek) contributed greatly to the development of this genre. The Gandz is narrative in character while the Tagh provides a moving commentary on the text.
